There's something inherently repulsive in passionate nationalism. It's more basic than the philosophical repugnance of "my country right or wrong" - it's the passionate nationalists themselves. The utter senselessness of national politics almost seems inevitable when you consider that the five percent of the public who consider themselves "politically active" consists entirely of hooting yahoos and disenfranchised academics.
Not all Americans wrap themselves in the flag ... Hold this truth to be self-evident: that few things can make you as ashamed of your country as watching a gaggle of spirited jingoists demonstrating their pride in it. This red-faced rabble of peasants, whose only sense of self-worth stems fom the plot of ground where they were ejected, are too ignorant to realize that giving a damn is no longer worth the effort. Such is our national disgrace. Apathy seems the most sagacious recourse: given ample latitude, they'll spark another war and thin their own ranks. The bitter smack of irony is that most of them reject Darwin's theories, while the rest of us rely on them. | |||
